Marshall County, the 92nd county in order of formation, located in the extreme western region of Kentucky, is bounded by Livingston, Lyon, Trigg, Calloway, Graves and McCracken counties and contains 304 square miles. It is the only county in the Jackson Purchase Area that doesn't border another state.
The county was once part of the Chickasaw Indian lands acquired in the Jackson Purchase of October 18, 1818. From 1818 to 1822 the area that is now Marshall County was part of Hickman County; from 1822 to 1842 it was the northern part of Calloway County. On June 1, 1842, Marshall county was created and named for U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Marshall. Benton was established at a central location as county seat. |
